Part of the reason Prof. Mann created this site was to warn of the possible dangers his invention (wearable computer) may have on society, if used improperly.

In a society obsessed with productivity, the apparatus could easily become like a prison uniform, tracking our every movement. Cellphones already do this to some extent.

In many ways, cellphones and pagers are like handcuffs, stealing our solitude and our right to personal autonomy.

With the growing emphasis on wearable computing as merely a tool for increasing productivity, Mann fears that his technology may be mis-used, and felt it necessary to create, by way of an extreme example, an open dialog and a serious inquiry into the issues surrounding this powerful technology.
