Homebrew, for some of us, is fun! The ability to design/build a
component, rather than just buying one off the shelf, opens up entirely
new worlds of possibility. And, considering that wearables are not
exactly standard equipment that you can get from Fry's...homebrew has
been an essential part of it.
Having said that, though, it's a heck of a lot easier to just buy a
component, than it is to homebrew it, most of the time. And the last
major part, the display, is finally becoming available from companies.
They're still expensive...but so were VGA monitors when they came out. I
just picked up a 14" color SVGA multisync for 10 cents at a garage sale!
Prices will fall...and a true off the shelf wearable will become not only
available, but cheap.
