I found my old 95LX in a drawer, the other day. Beautiful design,
and it ran for days on 2 common batteries...none of this infoLithium
stuff.

Why would you use a full fledged computer as a terminal to talk to
a computer? Unless the server in your backpack offers something
that the palmtop doesn't, at which point you might use the Palm
as a thin client network terminal, rather than ASCII or VT text
only.
(Much as I detest it, WinCE is designed to function as a thin client
terminal on some rather sophisticated networks)
Anyway, given a higher end palmtop like an iPaq running LINUX,
couldn't you just do away with the backpack server, and in the
process eliminate bulk, weight, and battery requirements?
