Yes. Adding an option to yor kernel paramaters in LILO/etc will make linux
use the first serial port as it's console. Then all the boot messages will
go to the serial port. I'm not sure if you need to seperately add a getty
for the serial line to your /etc/inittab, but this functionality was added
for router configurations where the *only* command prompt is on a serial
terminal. :)

I'm sure the Linux Documentation Project had a serial-console-howto
 or mini-howto somewhere...

Just don't forget you need an ascii serial input device to go with the
display if you're using it as a full terminal. :)
