I tend to agree with your suspicions Rick.

As for my favorite LINUX distro... it would have to be Slack or Debian as 
well TinFoil Hat Linux. (tinfoilhat.shmoo.com)

as for my favorite OS of all, one of the three main i386BSD variants (Open, 
Free, & Net)
 I like OpenBSD because of the large variety of ways to secure a system 
(although I usually patch up from old versions and stay away from newer ports 
for a year to 6mos, OpenSSH and Apache are examples why)

And I like FreeBSD for desktop situations, and its actually pretty fast (I 
have taught family how to install it and use KDE! Trained monkeys are not so 
entertaining now, I look to my family instead LOL). NetBSD I love for its 
portability and low resources needed to run, I have run NetBSD on a 486 50mhz 
CPU with 22mb of ram and played some Ncurses games without a slow...
